For CEP 811 this week I did a remix project! Before this week I had no idea what remixing was. As I read about it and watched videos it seemed very familiar to me since almost everything we see now a days in pop culture is remixed in some sort of way. Remixing is when you take something, whether it’s a video, image or song, and then you add onto it or change it in some way to make something new and meaningful out of it. Many movies we see today are remixed from old movies or even books and many songs and their beats are used by numerous artists. I used Mozilla Popcorn Maker to put my remix together and I searched for videos and songs with Creative Commons licensing.
For my project I had to pick a buzzword, or a hot topic, about educational technology and create a remix based on that word. I chose to do my project on 1:1 technology. I chose this because last year I piloted 1:1 technology in my classroom and this my district is continuing that journey. Having actually experienced 1:1 technology I felt like I could create a more meaningful remix. I also wanted to use 1:1 technology since that has been a really popular area of interest over the last few years in education and I felt like I could delve into what it meant to me.
As I created my remix I thought about the experience I had with 1:1 technology. I thought about how each student really got to use their device for many things. Not only were they using it to learn and apply their knowledge, but it they were using it to create, explore and collaborate, amongst many other things. This made search for videos of students using 1:1 devices. From there I thought about the many different ways students would be using them and let that guide me as I created my remix. Using Mozilla Popcorn Maker was pretty easy once I got the hang of it. I played around with it at first to get my bearings and then was able to use it pretty easily. Before this I hadn’t heard of Popcorn Maker so I’m excited to have it as a tool to possibly use in the future!
